When the owners of this west Dublin house commissioned an architect to design them an extension, they were not only improving their own home but also offering their daughter a valuable lesson. Ruth Condren, who is in her fourth year of studying architecture at DIT Bolton Street, could now put the theory into practice. She sat in on consultations with architect Ronan Rose-Roberts from the start.
The Romans would recognise the shape of Dublin's new O2 arena on North Wall Quay, even though it is all indoors and festooned with air-conditioning ducts and lighting gantries, with bars and food outlets lining the cavernous semi-circular concourses. The word arena derives from its original Latin meaning as sand - used to mop up the blood after gruesome public spectacles.

Bord Gáis Networks has announced that the winner of the National Distribution Control Building at Dubber Cross, Finglas is Denis Byrne Architects. The winning scheme offered an innovative and achievable work of modern architecture. The entry scored very high from a sustainability point of view. The project utilised the site well, making the building at the southern end and locating the parking behind it. The amorphous external form with projecting tower (which would be visible across the M50) was innovative; the internal layout studded with natural ventilation courtyards was flexible and interesting, offering cross views to landscape. The relationship between the different working areas was appropriate with the sense of a common working environment. More
